Study one category at a time.
Pick a category, such as family, food or numbers, and learn just those words. The cards and the schedule are the same as the main deck, so a word you learn here is a word the main deck already knows.
Pick a category
Nothing is due today.
The whole point of a review schedule is that it does not ask for more than it needs to. Come back tomorrow, or introduce a few new words now.
Done for now.

Words and characters together: the hiragana, katakana and kanji decks use the same five stages.

Ten is the default, across every category you study in a day and on top of the main deck. Update applies the new number straight away. Every new word comes back for review over the following days, so raise it a little at a time.
How this fits with the main deck
One record for each word. A word has one stage, wherever you studied it. Learn お母さん here and the main deck will not teach it to you again as new. Its reviews then turn up in both places when they are due, and answering in either one counts.
Its own daily limit. Category study introduces up to ten new words a day, across every category you open that day. That is on top of the main deck's fifteen, and you can change it under Settings. Reviews that are due are never limited.
The order. Words that are due come first. New words then arrive in the order the category's own page lists them.
