Katakana writing chart

Every katakana character, and a row of boxes to write each one in. The reference chart is the first sheet; after it comes a practice row for all104 characters: the 46 basic ones, the 25 with dakuten and handakuten, and the 33 combinations. Most charts stop at the first46, which is the half you learn in a week and then never need again.

Reading the chart. Down the left is the consonant, across the top is the vowel. Japanese has five vowel sounds and almost every character is one of them with a consonant in front, which is why the grid works at all.

The two marks. Dakuten, the two strokes, turn k into g, s into z, t into d and h into b. Handakuten, the small circle, turns h into p. Both go on last, after the character underneath is finished.

The gaps. The dashed squares are sounds Japanese does not have. Nothing is missing from the chart.

Trace the solid model, trace the faint one, then write the rest of the row from memory. Stroke order matters more than neatness: a character built in the wrong order looks almost right and will never look right at speed. The squares have faint quarter guides because that is what Japanese schools use, and they are what makes the proportions come out correctly rather than by luck.
