How to read manga in Japanese: a beginner's guide
Reading a manga in the original Japanese is one of the most satisfying early goals a learner can set. Much of what stops people on page one is not the language but the page itself: the order, text that runs downwards, and words drawn into the art. All of that can be learned in a few days.
Reading order: right to left
Japanese manga is read from right to left. The book opens from what an English reader thinks of as the back, the pages turn right to left, and on each page you start with the top right panel and work leftwards and down. Speech bubbles follow the same rule: in a panel, the top right bubble comes first.
Vertical text
Speech in manga is usually written vertically, which is called tategaki (縦書き). Each column reads from top to bottom, and the columns run from right to left. The long vowel mark ー turns to run downwards too, and small kana such as っ sit towards the top right of their square.
Furigana: the reading printed beside the kanji
Many manga print small hiragana beside the kanji to show how they are read. This is called furigana (ふりがな). Manga for younger readers usually have it on nearly every kanji, which makes them the best place to start: you can read every word aloud even when you do not know the character.
Manga aimed at children and teenagers, including shōnen (少年) and shōjo (少女) titles, generally carry more furigana than seinen (青年) and josei (女性) titles written for adults. Look at a page before you buy.
Sound words
Japanese has a large vocabulary of words for sounds and for how things move or feel, and manga draws them into the art. ドキドキ (dokidoki) is a racing heartbeat, キラキラ (kirakira) is sparkling, and シーン (shīn) is the sound of silence, used when nobody says anything. They are hard to look up because they are drawn rather than typed, so the course teaches the common ones as a set.
Choosing your first manga
- Full furigana. Check a page before you buy.
- A story set in everyday life, such as school, family, work or food. Fantasy and history bring vocabulary you will not use anywhere else.
- Something you already know in English, from the translation or the anime. Knowing the plot lets you guess words from context.
- A series, not a one-off. Each volume reuses the same characters and vocabulary, so volume three is easier than volume one.
How to keep going past page two
Look up a word when it keeps coming back, or when you cannot follow the scene without it, and skip the rest. A page read with a few gaps beats stopping on every line and giving up by page ten. A digital edition with a built-in dictionary makes looking things up much quicker.
Common questions
What level do I need to read manga in Japanese? With hiragana, katakana and basic grammar you can start on manga with full furigana, looking up words as you go. Manga without furigana needs far more kanji, so leave those for later.
Is manga good for learning Japanese? Yes, as reading practice. The pictures give you context, the language is conversational, and a series repeats its vocabulary. It is mostly casual speech, so pair it with a course for polite Japanese.
Why is manga read from right to left? Because Japanese is traditionally written in vertical columns that run from right to left, and books open to match.
Most of the difficulty on page one is the page, not the Japanese, and the page is the quick part to learn.
